National Provider Identifier (NPI)
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification Standard. The NPI is a unique identification
number for covered health care providers. When covered health care providers,
health plans, and health care clearinghouses submit claims/encounter
data, they will use the NPI in the administrative
and financial transactions adopted under HIPAA.
Beginning with processing dates on and after 03/01/2008, AHCCCS requires the use of the NPI
for covered providers on every claim submitted. Provider records should contain valid NPI information (if required for the Provider Type). Effective 03/01/2008, AHCCCS will begin the suspension of any Provider records for lack of an NPI.
